Changes made to 2009 RMPA Leagues

A number of changes were made to the 2009 International & National Leagues.

International League

At the RMPA International League Patrons Meeting held today at Shahzan House, the following was agreed:

  • Thai Polo Open will be played in a handicap range of 8 to 10 goals.
  • There will be 4 RMPA International League Tournaments in 2009 in all:
    1. Thai Open (9 - 18 January 2009)
    2. Royal Selangor International  (30 May - 7 June 2009)
    3. Malaysian Open Polo Tournament (20 -28 June 2009)
    4. Royal Pahang Classic (11 - 19 July 2009)
  • For the three Malaysian-held tournaments of the 2009 season, the handicap range will be 10 t0 14 goals..
  • RMPA will still bring in 2 independent umpires per tournament.
  • Playing Draw for all the tournaments will be done at the tournament prior.
  • The draw for the 1st RMPA International League Tournament, the Thai Open will be done on Sunday 13 Dec, at the South East Asia vs England match at Thai Polo Club.

There are only five RMPA Int'l League teams expected to play in the Thai Open in January.  League points will be allocated according to the number of teams that have entered and paid up for the the 2009 league (expected to be 7 teams.)  Points will be allocated to the 5 RMPA Int'l League Teams accoring to their finish in relation to each other.  For example, if the top RMPA Int'l League team finishes in 3rd place, it will still be awarded 7 points, as if it won the tournament.  All other teams will move up accordingly.

National League

Some National League issues were also brought to the attention of RMPA President His Royal Highness Tengku Mahkota Pahang.  Dato' Mohamed Moiz was asked to convey to Singapore Polo Club President Iqbal Jumabhoy National League patrons/players concerns of the high costs of Malaysian based teams to play in tournaments in Singapore.  It was estimated at RM70,000 per team.  Singapore would be asked to see what they can do to help.

An additional National League Tournament, to be run by RMPA may therefore be held on 8 to 17 May.  This will give teams which do not wish to play in Singapore an alternative tournament.
